Ravi River

Ravi River flows through both India and Pakistan and has its origin at the Banghal basin. The river flows at great speed through the region but is unfortunately the most polluted river in Pakistan. Several construction works are taking place on the river to preserve the fresh water, which can be used for irrigation purposes.

Ravi flows in the north eastern direction in Pakistan. It is one of the five famous rivers from which Punjab derives its name of being the land of five rivers. It is the smallest among the five eastern tributaries of Indus. Its source is in the basin of Banghal and slows through the southern part of Dhanladhar. Ravi waters both India and Pakistan. Since its source is in India it flows through the northwestern part of Chamba and through the southwestern part of Jammu and Kashmir. Finally it reaches Pakistan to water the land of India's neighbor.

The river is 422 miles long in Pakistan. The catchment area of the river Ravi is around 15,741 square miles.
Some major engineering projects have been taken up regarding the river like the Balloki and the Sudhnai headworks. The pace of the river in the mountainous region is around 130 miles and flows down 15,000 feet. It serves as demarcation between India and Pakistan for 23 miles before entering Pathankot at Chaudh. The river crosses Gurdaspur and enters Sialkot in Pakistan. Ravi River is joined by the Ujh River in Madhopur. Another brook joins the river near Jassar.

The River Ravi is by far the most polluted river in Pakistan. The river gets most polluted while flowing through the regions between Lahore and Balloki. Much of the waste products are deposited in the river which contaminates its water. The river has been reduced to a channel due to the serious and heavy adulteration. The water is used for irrigation only after it reaches Qadirabad. The construction work on the river is looked after by the River System Authority in Pakistan.

Ravi is the smallest river of all the five rivers, which waters both India and Pakistan.
