Painting the Colorful History
Lahore's National College of Arts started its journey as the Mayo School of Industrial Art. The first principal of the college was Lockwood Kipling. With the initiative of the British Authority, a museum was also planned along with the college. Lockwood and his son, Rudyard Kipling – the famous writer, put their best efforts to maintain the museum and college.Inspired by the growing popularity of the institution, the father-son duo stressed more on the art school. Workshops were built and new studios were introduced. By 1915, the college gained immense popularity all over the subcontinent and its fame reached the shores of England too.
Much later, the West Pakistan Government took over the institute and renamed it as the National College of Arts. Under its new banner, focus was more on fine

arts.The college witnessed another change in 1963, when it came under the administration of Department of Education. The college earned the status of an autonomous degree granting institution.
