King Edward Medical University


The King Edward Medical University was established in 1860. It was previously known as the Lahore Medical School. It is the premier and most renowned medical science institute in Pakistan.

King Edward Medical University is the second oldest medical institute in the whole sub continent, the first being the Calcutta Medical College. During the 19th century, both the medical college and the hospital were very small. The Medical College was positioned in the artillery barracks of the Government College in Lahore. The hospital was located in a stable. Dr. J.B. Scriven was the first principal of the college. The original strength of the college was a total of 49 students. A new unit was attached to the hospital in 1871. The Lahore Municipal Committee, the Indian Government and the Government of Punjab funded the construction of the new unit.

The King Edward Medical University of Lahore was granted university status in 1882. The Licentiate Diploma awarded by the University was renamed Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1891. It is during the same time that the medical college was renamed, as King Edward Medical University, after being granted permission by the sovereign. Lt. Col Ilahi Buksh was the first principal of the university after the partition took place in 1947. The current principal is Professor Mumtaz Hasan.

Extension and Renovation of the King Edward Medical University

New buildings and blocks of the medical university were constructed between 1910 and 1915. These buildings were constructed from the funding provided by the King Edward Memorial Funds. The university also got rich funding from the rulers of several princely states. Several of the university blocks are named after their donors. These are the Farid Kot Block, the Patiala block, Bahawalpur block and the Kapurthala block. The Anatomy department is located in the Farid Kot block. The Patiala block houses the administrative units. The Bahawalpur block contains the Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Pathology and Physiology. The Pharmacology unit is situated in the Kapurthala block.

Achievements of the King Edward Medical University

One of the major achievements of the King Edward Medical University is being granted recognition by the Senate of the University of Dublin in 1886. The university was granted the autonomous status in 2005.

Programs of Study

The King Edward Medical University in Lahore offers MD/ MS/ MDS programs for study. The subjects of study include a wide range of topics related to the medical sciences. These include anatomy, pathology, biochemistry, forensic medicine, physiology, pharmacology and community medicine. The other medical disciplines taught over here are cardiology, pediatrics, psychiatry, dermatology, chest medicine, neurology, general medicine and urology and social and preventive medicine.

The surgical units of the university provide extensive knowledge about the various fields of surgery.

Medical Hospitals and other institutes

The medical hospitals attached to the King Edward Medical University are Lady Willingdon Hospital, Mayo Hospital and Lady Aitchison Hospital.

There are various other institutes under this medical university. Some of the institutes that fall under King Edward Medical University are the School of Nursing, School of Paramedical, Center For Nuclear Medicine, College of Ophthalmology and Allied Vision Sciences, Convalescent Center, School of Orthopedic Technology, Tuberculosis Research Center and School of Physiotherapy. The university also has an attached lab belonging to the Biochemistry Department.
