Trondheim is a city in the Norwegian county of Sør-Trøndelag. Founded in 997, Viking King Olav Tryggvason named the city as Kaupangen in the same year. Later its name was changed to Nidaros. It was made the seat of the King and was also made the capital of Norway till 1217. It became a Swedish territory for a brief period after the Peace Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. The city was occupied by Trondheim by German forces during World War II until the end of the war in Europe in 1945. It was also the seat of the Catholic Archbishopric for Norway from 1152. The city, presently a center of education, technical and medical research is also a municipality in the Sør-Trøndelag county.
Area & Location:Lies at the place where river Nidelva meets a large fjord, Trondheim is located at 63°23' Latitude North and 10°21' Longitude East. The city covers a total area of 342 sq. km with 322 sq. km of land area. With 1,60,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in the country.
