PYONGYANG

Pyongyang is the capital of North Korea. The city has a number of historic names such as Kisong, Hwangsong, Rangrang, Sogyong, Sodo, Hogyong, Changan, Ryugyong. With numerous willow trees planted in the city, it got its name from Ryugyong, which means 'capital of willows'. The city was founded in 2333 BC as Wanggomsong and later turned into a major city under Gojoseon. Pyongyang, formed after it was split from the South P'yongan province in 1946, is administered as a Directly Governed City. The city, which faced much destruction during the Korean War has been completely rebuilt.



Area & Location: Sits on the Taedong River, Pyongyang is located at 39°02' Latitude North and 125°45' Longitude East. Pyongyang occupies 80 sq. miles and has an approximate population of 3.8 million.

Transportation: The city offers an extensive transportation system to its people. The two-line underground metro system simplifies the lengthy roads that connect other cities.

Tram, trolley bus service and automobiles include the public transportation in the city. Sunan Capital International Airport that operates international flights serves the city.

One of the tallest structures in the city is the 105-storied Ryugyong Hotel, which is a major place where tourists prefer to stay. The city also has seven revolving restaurants that attract tourists with its sumptuous dishes. Ryugyong Hotel, Koryo Hotel, Pothonggang Hotel, Ryanggang Hotel, Sosan Hotel and Youth Hotel are the outstanding hotels in the city.

Places of Attraction: Pyongyang possesses many monuments and architectures. The wide avenues such as Kwangbok Street and Changgwang Street and the high-rising buildings capture the eyes of those who enter the city. Arch of Triumph-a large replica of Paris's Arc de Triomphe, Juche Tower and two large stadiums -Kim Il Sung Stadium and Rungnado May Day Stadium are the major highlights of the city. Pyongyang TV Tower is a minor landmark of Pyongyang.
