Rivers in Rotterdam

The River Nieuwe Mass passes through the center of the city thereby dividing it into two equal halves. Both these halves are connected by several bridges and a railway tunnel. Rotterdam downtown is located on the north bank of the river. The southern part of the city is known as De Kop van Zuid.

Surrounded predominantly by water bodies and being at the receiving end of several sea storms, the city has been guarded by the construction of dams and dikes. Initially the water of the River Rotte flowed into the Nieuwe Mass River without any interruption. However, after the 1980s, the course of the river had to be altered due to the setting up of the second subway line at Rotterdam. At present, the water of the river is made to flow through a pipeline as it crosses Boerangat and finally merges into the Nieuwe Mass.
