Diergaarde Blijdorp Rotterdam





Diergaarde Blijdorp is one of the oldest zoos of Netherlands. The zoo is home to many animals. Other than that it houses a botanical garden and the Dutch National Bromelia Collection.

Located in the northwestern part of the city, Diergaarde Blijdorp is one of the oldest zoos of Netherlands. This Rotterdam zoo was opened in 1857. The zoo was completely destroyed in the bombing during World War II and was rebuilt in the 20th century.

The New Rotterdam Zoo:

The new Diergaarde Blijdorp was designed by Sybold van Ravesteyn. The zoo opened its doors to visitors on 7th December 1940. A new part under the name Oceanium was added to the zoo in 2001. The Rotterdam zoo became a national monument in April, 2004.

Special Attractions in Diergaarde Blijdorp:

Other than being a safe shelter for various animals including tigers, elephants and various other animals, Diergaarde Blijdorp is home to a botanical garden. It also houses the Dutch National Bromelia Collection. The zoo offers Blijdorp by Night package which gives you the opportunity to be a part of an adventurous tour. The zoo also offers various events for children so that they can learn about nature in a fun filled manner.

The Blijdorp Blad:
The zoo has its own quarterly magazine which is called the Blijdorp Blad. The zoo celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2007. The first edition of this magazine has articles covering the long history of the zoo.

Opening Hours of Diergaarde Blijdorp:

Diergaarde Blijdorp remains open on all 365 days. During summer, the zoo opens at 9:00 hours and closes at 18:00 hours. During winters, it remains open till 17:00 hours.

Access to Diergaarde Blijdorp:

You can have an easy access to both the entrance at Rivierahal side and Blijdorp from the Rotterdam Central Station. You can also avail bus 33, which will drop you near the entrance of the Oceanium. Bus 44 and 49 are also ideal options for entering from the Rivierahal side.

Admission Fee at Diergaarde Blijdorp:

The admission fee for children from 3 to 9 years is € 14.50. The fee for people from 10 to 64 years is € 17.50. Senior citizens need to pay € 16.00 for entering the zoo. The fee is even less for disabled persons. It is € 8.00 for them. No entry fee is charged for children up to 2 years.
