Rotterdam Airport was created after World War II, when the government decided to build a second national airport. Before the foundation of this airport, the Waalhaven airport used to serve Rotterdam. During the Second World War, this airport was destroyed as Germans were using this airport for serving their own purpose.

Zestienhoven polder was chosen as the site for Rotterdam Airport. The construction of this airport began in 1955. The airport was officially opened the very next year. It is operated by the Schiphol Group. The growth of this was stunned in 1970s. The airport remained closed for the next thirty years. The condition of the airport started improving with the economic growth of 1990s.
