The name 'Rotterdam' has been derived from a dam in a small river, the Rotte that joins the Nieuwe Maas at the heart of the city. Rotterdam attained city rights in 1340. The city was the completely destroyed in the bombings of the German Luftwaffe in 1940. Since 2004 Asian ports like Singapore and Shanghai have taken over its world leading position and now it has become the seventh largest port in the world in terms of cargo traffic. It is also considered as the largest port in Europe.

The city is known for its architectures like Van Nelle fabriek -a monument of modern factory, de Kuip-Feyenoord's soccer stadium, The Erasmus Bridge -a 2,600-foot cable stayed bridge, Montevideo -the 152 meter tallest residential building in the Netherlands, Delftse Poort, the151 meter tallest office building and Euromast (Eurotower), the 186-meter long building which has long been a major tourist attraction. The Hoek van Holland beach is another major tourist attraction in the city.
