Location of Vondelpark
Vondelpark is located in the heart of the city. It is quite close to the other attractions of the city, such as Van Gogh Museum, Leidseplein, Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, etc. A number of hotels like Vondel Park Plaza Amsterdam, Hotel Prinsen Amsterdam and Hotel Groenh of Amsterdam are situated in close vicinity to this park.
History of Vondelpark
The park opened its gate to public in 1865. The park was created on 8 hectares of land. It was designed by L.D. Zocher. In the beginning, it used to be regarded as a horse riding and strolling park but now the park comprises of fields, pathways and ponds. By 1877, the area covered by this park reached 45 hectares from 8 hectares.
Attractions of Vondelpark
Vondelpark of Amsterdam houses a statue of the famous Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel, from whom the park derived its present name. Here, you can also find a music dome made of cast iron, a film museum, a playground called Groot Melkhuis and an open air theater. This theater is a popular venue for cultural shows. Most of them are musical shows. But children special shows are also held on every Wednesday afternoon from 15th May to 15th September.
Being the largest city park, Vondelpark is visited by approximately 10 million people every year.
