History of University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam was established in the year 1632 as Athenaeum Illustre, in order to mainly educate students about Trade and Philosophy. In the initial days, the classes were given at the residence of the professors since the building was not yet constructed. It was in 1877 when the Athenaeum Illustre came to be known as the University of Amsterdam after being officially granted the status of a university. Thereafter the university gained immense popularity and by the 1900's the total number of students was about 900. At present the university has more than 25,000 students and is one of the flourishing Dutch universities.
Faculties and Research at University of Amsterdam
The University of Amsterdam currently has seven faculties which include natural sciences, law, economics and business, medicine, humanities and dentistry. Each of these faculties is headed by a dean and has a central services department which looks into the complete organization of the faculties. The University of Amsterdam currently offers 62 bachelor degree programs which are taught in Dutch and more than 100 different programs which are taught in English. The University also has an excellent research program and it works in collaboration with several other universities for providing better research opportunities to the students.
Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA)
The University of Amsterdam has entered into collaboration with the Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) which is a technical and professional vocational college. Under this special program, students who have made the wrong choice in terms of subject in the first year, is allowed to choose a better option from the other subjects offered at the university as well as in the HvA.
University of Amsterdam Library
The University of Amsterdam also has an extensive library which is located in the main building as well as in other buildings spread all over the city. The Central University of Amsterdam Library is situated on the Singel and there are department specific libraries as well. All these libraries have a collection of about 4 million books and a large range of manuscripts as well.
Facilities at University of Amsterdam
The Amsterdam University has a wide variety of facilities which are open for the general public as well. These include the Special Collections Library, University Sports Centre, restaurants at the university campus and the CREA cultural centre.
