The present Amsterdam Mayor is Job Cohen. He was born in 1947 at Haarlem. He graduated from the University of Groningen. He became a professor in 1983. His political career started in 1933 when he became a member of the cabinet of the Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers. He held the post of the Deputy Minister for Education. He became the Mayor of Amsterdam in January 2001 after being appointed by the Monarch. Job Cohen has taken many important steps as a Mayor of Amsterdam, such as legalizing the same-sex marriage.
