Dutch Maritime Museum



Dutch Maritime Museum, also known as the Scheepvaartmuseum, is set in an old warehouse and a National Naval Depot that served as a Dutch navy artillery storehouse.
Cradling the memories of the Dutch maritime period in the 15th century, the Dutch Maritime Museum houses collectibles and artifacts that provide an insight into the far fetched navigational expeditions of the Dutch East India Company. Set in the 300-year-old National Naval Depot dating back to the year 1656, the Dutch Maritime Museum boasts of one of the most expansive maritime collections in the world.

Reconstructing the Past
Collectibles like maps, ship replicas, paintings and weaponry conjure up a 15th century ambiance, highlighting on the trade routes, the navigational routes and the acquired overseas Dutch colonies. The replica of the famous merchant ship - The Dutch East Indiaman Amsterdam - takes the center stage in the museum. Numerous programs are being organized aboard this replica to exemplify a sailor's life during a voyage. Considered to have sunk in the deep waters off the coast of Hastings in England in the year 1749, this merchant ship of Amsterdam was the symbol of trade networks between the Dutch country of Netherlands and Indonesia.


An Itinerary Through the Dutch Maritime Museum
Apart from maps, navigational charts, atlases and ship models, the artifacts in Dutch Maritime Museum also include documents testifying to the purchase of the Dutch colonies. The paintings in the Dutch Maritime Museum provide an insight into the sea warfare and battles that have paved Dutch maritime history. One of the largest paintings portrays the Battle of Gibralter that takes the spectator on a journey to the 17th century battle field where the Dutch had defeated the Spaniards.

The most eye catching antique in the museum is the gilded Royal Barge that was constructed in the year 1818 for King Willem I. This 17 meters long barge is one of the important architectural catchments, reflecting the master craftsmanship of the time and the period.

Dutch Maritime Museum: General Information
The Dutch Maritime Museum in Amsterdam is open on all days from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, except for Mondays. The Mondays are included in the opening schedule from mid-June to mid-September. The museum is closed on New Year's Day and Queen's Day. The entrance fee for adults is 7 Euro and that of children between 6 and 17 years of age is 4 Euro.

One of the most important Amsterdam attractions, the Dutch Maritime Museum is a classifying factor of the Netherlands history.
