The College of Aldermen

The College of Aldermen forms a major part of the government of Amsterdam. The everyday functions of the city are run by the college. However, any decision taken by the college is subject to approval by the council.

One of the most important governing bodies of Amsterdam is the College of Aldermen. The mayor (appointed by the Monarch) along with eight aldermen forms this college. These eight aldermen are elected from and by other members of the council. The everyday functions of the government are run by the 'college'. The mayor and eight aldermen jointly carry out the responsibilities.

Responsibilities of the College of Aldermen

The way the college functions is not quite similar to that of the council. The weekly meetings held on every
Thursday and Friday can only be attended by the members. The general public comes to know about the decisions taken in the meeting from the press release. They can also come to know about these decisions from the journal titled 'News from the College of Aldermen'. But these decisions are subject to inspection if necessary at the Public Information Center.

The Role of Council

Since the everyday functions are run by the College of Aldermen, Amsterdam, it is the college's responsibility to take various resolutions. However, the council has the supreme authority. They have the right to accept or reject the proposals made by the college. So before these policies are finally implemented, they should be approved by the council. For better management, the city council distributes tasks among the members of the Aldermen College.
