Located in the heart of the city, Artis Zoo is one of the old attractions of the city. It opened its gate to the visitors in 1838. Afforestation has been done at the zoo since its establishment. At present it houses about 200 species of tree. The zoo is also home to nearly 700 species of animal. Some of the rare and endangered plant and animal species can be found at the zoo.
Artis Zoo also exhibits some human accomplishments. Number of buildings, such as the Aquarium, the Library building and the Large Museum at the zoo exemplify the traditional architectural style of the Netherlands.
Artis Zoo - Home to Rare Species of Tree and Animal
Artis Zoo also houses a Botanical Garden. Various rare species of trees, plants, shrubs can be seen at this Botanical Garden. The acclimatized greenhouses display some of the unique plants. The aquarium at the zoo is home to several crocodiles.
The Zoological Museum, Geological Museum and Planetarium of Artis Zoo
Artis Zoo in Amsterdam also has a zoological museum, a geological museum and planetarium. Some of the rare 19th century scientific collections are exhibited at the zoological museum. Another interesting place is the planetarium, where you can learn about the movement of the Earth and other planets. A special planetary show at the planetarium provides one with a detailed description about the world of stars.
Artis Zoo of Amsterdam remains open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm. However, in summers, the zoo closes at 4:00 pm. Guided tours are offered on every Sunday. There is no need to pay any extra fee for this tour.
