Amsterdam Art

Amsterdam art throws light upon a rich legacy of art works by master painters like Rembrandt and Van Gogh that are well preserved in the art museums and galleries of the city.

Amsterdam art manifests itself in the work of the great Dutch masters. Their works not only earned them critical acclaim and worldwide reputation but also led to their period, i.e. the 17th century, being known as the age of the 'Dutch Masters'. Some of these masters were Jan Steen, Johannes Vermeer, Jacob van Ruysdael and the great Rembrandt van Rjin. The artistic traditions of Amsterdam were maintained by the subsequent generations of painters including Piet Mondriann, M.C. Escher and Vincent Van Gogh.

Some of the best art works of Amsterdam are preserved in the various museums across the city. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam contains an unparalleled collection of Dutch artwork. These antiques date back to the Golden age. The Rembrandt House Museum has carefully preserved the masterpieces of this great painter. It also contains paintings by the people who were instrumental in inspiring Rembrandt. The Van Gogh Museum contains as many as 200 paintings. Apart from these paintings, there are 500 sketches which depict the master painter at various points of time.
