Kathmandu University in Nepal


Kathmandu University is one of the premier education centers in Nepal. It is situated in Dhulikhel Municipality with a wonderful landscape of the great Himalayan Mountains in the background. The university has links with international institutions through joint research programs, teacher/student exchange programs, and credit transfer. This way, it has built an identity for itself in the global education arena.

The university was established in the year 1985. Since then, the university grew in size and facilities over the years. Besides the schools contained within the university, there are also a number of colleges and institutions that are affiliated to the Kathmandu University.

Reaching Kathmandu University

This location is approximately at a distance of 30 kilometers from Kathmandu. The Araniko Highway is at a distance of 2 kilometers. Public transport is available from Kathmandu Valley to reach Dhulikhel. People can take buses from one of the major bus stations at Purano Bus Park, Koteswar, Maitighar and Baneswar. After getting down at the Kathmandu University stop, one has to walk about 8 minutes to reach the university building. The university can also be reached by private cars. The scenic beauty on the Chinese road (Araniko highway) is very pleasant.

Kathmandu University Administration

The Kathmandu University is an autonomous body. There are three main bodies governing the university that takes major policy decisions.

KU Senate

The Senate consists of 31 members, who are all well recognized in their sphere of activities. There are educationists, politicians and industrialists. There are also representatives from affiliated institutions who are part of the Senate. Students also have representatives in the Senate and hence form a part of the decision-making system of the university. The Senate takes decisions on degrees, academic programs, affiliations, annual budget, etc. The Prime Minister of the country, who is also the Chancellor of the university, is the chairperson of the Senate.

Executive Council

The Executive body is a 5-member team that enforces and implements the policy decisions taken by the Senate.

Academic Council

The main academic and educational authority of the university lies with the Academic council, a team of 15 members. Some important functions of this body are to setup and maintain the quality of education, setup the course contents, evaluation techniques and formulate admission criteria.

Schools under Kathmandu University

The University comprises of six different schools, which has average student strength of about 2500 students. Kathmandu University delivers quality education in a wide variety of subjects at Under Graduate, Graduate and Post Graduate levels. The subjects offered to the students are science, medicine, education, environment, human & natural resources, biotechnology engineering, management, pharmacy, music and information technology. The overall student intake per year including the affiliated colleges is around 1500.

    Evaluation and Entrance at the Kathmandu University

    A semester system of education is followed in the University. Each year consists of 230 working days. Students are continuously evaluated during each semester. Number of faculty in the university is around 250, which follow a 1 to 12 teacher-student ratio. The university is equally stringent in recruitment of teachers as they are about admission of students. The students need to have good academic background and have to clear entrance examinations containing written papers and interviews.
