Thamel is one of the busiest locations in Kathmandu, Nepal. The local people pronounce the word as Thomel. Thamel History
During the seventies, most of the hotels and guesthouses were located in an area called Freak Street. Thamel located in the outskirts was filled only with scrubs, fields and trees. Later in the mid seventies, Rana Palace housed Kathmandu guesthouse, which had just 12 rooms. Gradually many hotels started in this area, as there were large open spaces for the purpose. Thamel thus developed gradually and today the place is full of life and ebullience.

Thamel begins from a place in the south called Tahiti Tole. The major landmarks of Thamel are hot breads bakery and Kathmandu Guest House. Hotel Ama Dablam, Hotel Marshyangdi and hotel Vaishali are some of the popular hotels in Thamel. Kantipath is the main street that lies in the west of Thamel. Here tourists buses are available that leave for Pokhara early morning. Tourists can buy books from Pilgrim Book House, which is one of the best in Thamel. Those who love to shop can visit the Sanchaya Kosh complex, which is a famous shopping mall in the region.
