Kathmandu shopping is an interesting part of the Kathmandu tour. Tourists can choose from a wide range of items that include, handicrafts, antiques, bronze statues, clothings, thangkas, jewelry and Kashmiri handicrafts. Indrachowk, Asan, Thamel, Khichapokhri, Freak Street, Durbar Square, Basantapur Square and Kopundol are some of the good places to shop in Kathmandu.

Things to Buy in Kathmandu

Tourist will find a number of shops and arcades on the main Kathmandu Street. From here they can buy traditional potteries, beautiful jewelries, garments and crafts items of Nepal. Household brassware items are available in plenty at the various stalls in Asan and Indrachowk.

Various curios of the Tibetan style are flocked at the markets of Thamel and Basantapur Square. To buy gems and jewelries, one can visit the eastern side of new Road where these items range in style and variety. Noor Gems is also a popular shop in Kathmandu on the Durbar Marg. Nepalese embroidery bags and boxes are also good shopping items in Kathmandu.

Buying Khukuri

While shopping in Kathmandu, tourists will come
across an interesting item, popularly known as Khukuri or the Gurkha knife.This knife is used as a weapon by the Gurkha army.This is also a traditional accessory of the Nepalese. The knife's handle is made of hardwood. The carbon steel blade is symbolic of the Lord Shiva's spear. Khukuri is one of the major attractions for the buyers in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu Garments

Shopping in Kathmandu is fun and exciting. Those who are fond of fashionable dresses and outfits can shop around Freak Street and Thamel in Kathmandu. These shops sell T-shirt, bags, caps, shawls, Nepali topi and ready-made garments.

Kashmiri items are also available in the markets in Kathmandu. Carpets, shawls, papier mache, tapestry and handicrafts are sold at a quite reasonable price. Tourists can visit the shopping center named Sanchaya Kosh Bhawan where stocks are plenty and prices are cheap.

Antiques from Tibet

In Kathmandu, antiques are sold in the shops located on the Durbar Square. Some of these items are quite expensive. Tibetan thangkas are mostly found in the Thamel area near K.C's Restaurant. Many shops in this area hold an exquisite selection of bronze statues.
