Kathmandu Police


Kathmandu Police is the law enforcing body in the city and is a unit of the larger Nepal Police Force. The police force in Kathmandu has developed over the last one fifty years. The monarchy of Nepal has played a major role in developing the police force.

History of Nepal Police

The Police Force in Nepal was formally official recognition in 1864. The system was still in its nascent stage. Nearly, some ninety years later, during the nineteen fifties, the first Police Head Quarters were established. The first Inspector General of Police in Nepal and Kathmandu was Mr. Toran Shamsher J.B. Rana. The Police Act of Kathmandu and Nepal was passed in the year 1956.

The standard of the Nepal Police in the 1950s and early sixties was not up to the mark to deal with all situations. The Nepal government had to approach the Indian government to develop the police force.

Kathmandu Police Departments

The several departments of the Nepal Police include intelligence division, motor transport and radio sections, counter intelligence branch, Criminal investigation branch, the human resource department, community department and narcotics department. The police force also maintains missing persons squad and offers special service for the protection of women and children.
