Kathmandu Mayor is the executive head of the Kathmandu Municipal Corporation. The Municipal Corporation of Kathmandu was established in 1976 and is under the Ministry of Local Development. The Mayor of Kathmandu is an executive officer of Kathmandu municipality, who is elected by popular vote for a fixed tenure of 5 years.

The Mayor of Kathmandu municipality is assisted in his executive duties by a Deputy Mayor, and a ward Chairperson. The Mayor is also assisted by four ward members, women representatives from each of the 35 wards, and a Secretary. The various department heads also report to the mayor about their activities.
The administrative departments of Kathmandu Municipal Corporation include, Urban Development Department, Finance Department, Administration Department, Environment Department, Heritage Department, Revenue Department, Pubic Works Department, Public Health Department, Social Welfare Department, Protocol and Liaison Secretariat, Information and Communication Department, Law and Litigation Department, and City Planning Commission.

The Mayor of Kathmandu Municipal Corporation deputes his executive functions to the different departments. For administrative viability, the city of Kathmandu is divided into 35 wards having a total of nearly 80,450 houses, and over 7,02,000 inhabitants. The various functional departments are:
- Water supply - The Kathmandu Municipality supplies filtered water to Kathmandu households daily. It maintains nearly 2400 private drinking water taps.

- Solid waste Disposal - The Municipal Corporation on a regular basis removes 350 tonnes of solid refuse from Kathmandu city.
- Roads - Kathmandu Municipality maintains 300 kilometers of metaled road, about 100 km of gravel road, and over 30 km of earthen road
- Education - The municipality of Kathmandu, under the executive control of the mayor runs lower, primary and secondary schools.
- Health - The city of Kathmandu has a total of 13 hospitals and 17 health centers.
- Social Services - Kathmandu Municipal Corporation maintains 21 ambulances, 3 fire fighting machines, 25 public toilets, and 5 dead body vans.
Kathmandu Mayor occupies a vital position in the set-up of the Ministry of Local Development, and is bestowed with executive powers.
