Kathmandu food is influenced mainly by the food habit of the hilly regions, Tibetan food habit and also to some extent, Indian food. The food of Kathmandu and Nepalese food in general, is very simple yet delicious. Rice is the staple food cereal of the people of Kathmandu. Of course, side dishes, such as lentils and vegetable curry are also taken along with rice. There are many restaurants and roadside food stalls, which serve Nepali cuisines in Kathmandu.
Typical Food of Kathmandu
A typical Nepali meal includes rice, locally called 'bhat', lentil soup called 'daal', a couple of vegetable preparations called 'torkari' in general. Fish, meat, pickles and certain seafood too are served by Nepali restaurants. Momo or Dimsum is popular among the local people of Kathmandu as well as the tourists. This is a light snack food yet something very wholesome. Thukpas or soups of different types make for healthy starter food. The following list gives the name of some of the authentic Kathmandu Food:

As Kathmandu experiences moderately low temperature throughout the year and very low temperatures during winter, the people practice the method of preservation and pickling of meat and vegetables. They also chew on raw beetle nuts to keep themselves warm. A lot of spices and herbs too are used in cooking. The common spices include, turmeric powder, chili powder, garlic, cardamom and cinnamon to name a few.
While availing meals in Kathmandu, look out for the number of supplementary items offered and the quality of rice. These two factors along with the overall quality of restaurant decides the rate of the meal.
