Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of the most-visited places in the city of Kathmandu. It is said that this Durbar square was set up between 16th and 17th century. Wonderful palaces of Shah and Malla kings can be seen here. This alluring tourist destination is situated in Basantapur, which lies in the city center.
Hanuman Dhoka Palace in the Durbar Square
One of the main attractions of Durbar Square is the Hanuman Dhoka Palace Complex. Before 19th century, it had been the residence of royal Nepalese, however, enthronement ceremonies still take place over here. The Hanuman Dhoka Palace has wooden windows. Mahendra Museum and King Tribhuwan Memorial Museum are also located inside the museum complex.
Kumari Chowk- a Wonderful Place to Visit in Kathmandu

Kumari Chowk, another major attraction of Nepal, stands in the southern corner of Kathmandu Durbar Square.
A Nepalese girl Durba resides here. She is believed to be the incarnation of goddess Taleju and during the religious festivals local people worship her as a Hindu goddess. However, it should be mentioned that when these Nepalese girls reach their pubescence, another little girl (3/5 years old) is selected. She is again worshiped as Durba.
Cultural World Heritage site
Apart from this, a number of courtyards and temples are also built inside this complex. They reflect the original pagoda and Newar architectural style. Some of the temples that are found in this area are Jagannath Temple, Nasal Chowk, Dequtale Temple, Mahendreshvara Temple, Taleju Temple, Bhandarkal, Mul Chowk,Trailokya Mohan Narayan Temple, Bhandarkal, Vilar Temple, Shiva Temple, Manju Deval, Kasthamandapa, Simha Sattal and Ashok Binayak Shrine. According to UNESCO Kathmandu Durbar Square is one of the 8 Cultural World Heritage sites.
