Kathmandu Demography


Kathmandu Demography is of primary significance in shaping the course of events in the history of the city. According to the census report of 2001, around 1,096,865 persons are residing in Kathmandu. This historic city has high population density. Since the past 10 years, there has been a remarkable growth in the Kathmandu population. Presently, 52 % of the entire population is male and the rest are females.

Kathmandu Population

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics, among 701,962 people, 320,801 are female and 381,161 are male. According to 1991 census report, 127,194 families were seen to be staying in this capital city.

Presently, the number of families residing in this particular area have increased to 244,416. However, 70 percent among them stay in Municipality and the remaining 30 percent stay in Village Development Committees.

Ethnic Groups in the Capital City of Nepal

There are several ethnic groups inhabiting in the city of Kathmandu. Their culture differs from each other. Some of the ethnic groups that have contributed in the cultural diversity of the city are Kirati, Tamangs and Newars.

The two dominant religions of Kathmandu are Buddhism and Hinduism.
