Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal is a well-known tourists destination. There are many popular sites to visit in Kathmandu, each of them having a unique characteristic and charm of its own. Swayambhu Stupa: This is a popular Buddhist site in Kathmandu. Swayambhu Stupa is located on top of the hill that overlooks the valley of Kathmandu. The swayambhu temple on the hilltop has a long stairs running down to the statue of Buddha at the entrance. The stupa has eyes painted on four of its sides, which symbolize the eyes of Buddha on his worshipers.
Durbar Square: This area in Kathmandu is considered to be the heart of the city. There are many temples, statues, places, courtyards and shrines to visit here. Here you will find priests and sadhus to rickshaw pullers, and souvenir shops. The old royal palace features two stone lions on the sides of the gate. Hanuman Dhoka: This is the ancient royal palace, which comprise of exquisite architectural works. The gate of Hanuman Dhoka has carved figure of Lord Rama's assistant, God Hanuman. The figure of Narsimha, a reincarnation of Lord Vishnu in the form of a chimera with a head of lion, is present in the palace. This palace is said to belong to the Malla king.
Pashupatinath temple: This temple is a famous religious site in Kathmandu, and is very popular among pilgrims and tourists. Dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva, this temple has huge gatherings during festivals. The temple architecture is unique and has carved figures of birds, lions, sun and moon. The figures of Apsara and Ashtha Bhairava is carved on the temple doors and painted in golden to give a exotic look to the temple.
Kathmandu attractions also include, Kumari Chowk, National Museum, Bahaktapur and Changu Narayan temple. Kumari chowk is the residence of the Nepals living goddess. Changu Narayan temple features pagoda style architecture and is a dedicated to Lord Vishnu.
