Kathmandu Language
The language of the people of Kathmandu is Indo Aryan Nepali language but there are various dialects, depending on the place they come from. The most spoken Nepali dialect is Nepal Bhasa, spoken by the Newars. The Nepal Bhasa literature is highly esteemed. During the rule of the Malla kings, this language had flourished well. Many folk songs, stories, dramas and one act plays were written during this time. For conversation, tourists who do not understand Nepali may use either English or Hindi as these languages are widely understood.

The Nepalese people are predominantly Hindus and Buddhism too is widely accepted. Though the official figure of the Buddhist population is only five percent, the Mahayana Buddhist practices have mingled with Hindu ritualistic practices. Muslims and Christians too can be found in Nepal, though they form minority community. Significantly, Nepal is the only official Hindu country in the world.
Kathmandu Food
Food is an important aspect of the culture of a community or nation. Nepali cooking uses dairy product, made from Yak milk. They have also perfected the art of preservation, as this is necessary for those living in the hilly regions, where food is not so easily available. Their daily meal comprises rice, pulse and curry.
