Mexico City





Mexico City is the capital of the nation of Mexico. It is also the largest city of the country and one of the largest cities in the world. The city was founded as a municipality in 1521 by Cortes. "Mexico City" refers to the whole metropolitan area of Greater Mexico City. According to the constitution, it is the Federal District. It has become one of the great financial, economic, educational, cultural and tourist centers of the world. Before the establishment of the Mexican Federal District by the new government in 1824, Mexico City had served as the seat of government for both the State of Mexico and the nation. The city grew economically and culturally and became the financial center of Latin America.

Area & Location: Located in the Valley of Mexico, the city is situated at 19&dge;24'-19&dge;03' Latitude North and Longitude 98&dge;57'-99&dge;22' Longitude West. Sitting about 2,240 m above sea level, the city covers a total area of 1,499 sq. km. It serves as home to 8,605,239 people.

Transportation: Sistema de Transporte Colectivo Metro, an extensive metro system, which is the largest in Latin America serve the city.
