Parliament Kuala Lumpur


The Parliament, Kuala Lumpur is a popular landmark of the city inaugurated in the year 1963. The magnificent building is the place where the Malaysian Parliament sits.

Inaugurated in the year 1963, the Parliament, Kuala Lumpur is one of the prominent landmarks of the city. Located at the Perdana Lake Garden, the Parliament House at Kuala Lumpur is sited close to the Tungu Negara, the national monument of Malaysia.

Birth and Genesis of the Parliament

The seed of establishing the Parliament House Malaysia was sown by Tunku Abdul Rahman, the first Prime Minister of Malaysia. The building was constructed in September 1962 but was opened on 21 November 1963 by Tuanku Syed Putra ibni Almarhum Syed Hassan Jamalullail, the third Prime Minister of Malaysia. The building was constructed at the cost of 18 million Malaysian Ringgits and was the tallest building of the city in those days.

Architecture of the Parliament

The Parliament House of Kuala Lumpur has two
phases. The first phase is the main building that comprises three stories while the other is the annex building comprising 18 stories. The main building has two identically designed halls called the Dewan Rakyat, where the Parliament sits, and the Dewan Negara, which is the room of the Senate. Both the rooms are beautifully decorated with the conventional Islamic designs. The annex tower houses the offices of the representatives of the Parliament and the Senate.

The façade of the Parliament House in Kuala Lumpur is colored in white hue whereas the interiors display an intricate wood work and hold the pictures of the old Sultans and Prime Ministers of Malaysia. There is a beautiful park beside it that is decorated with species of ornamental plants and is frequented by a number of beautiful deers.

Although one of the prominent tourist attractions of the city, the Parliament House can only be visited with an approval letter signed by the Secretary of the Parliament. The visitors have to follow a strict dress code to enter the premises of the Parliament House. Photography is strictly prohibited within the premises.
