Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is a renowned orthopedic surgeon and medical officer of Malaysia and the first Malaysian to go to space. Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor is popularly known for his experiments on space and his immense contribution to medical science.
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was the first Malaysian to go to space under the “Angkasawan Program” in collaboration with Russia. It was on the 10th of October 2007 when Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was launched to the International Space Station on Soyuz TMA-11 along with a team of 16 members. He then returned to the earth on 21st of October 2007 on Soyuz TMA-10.
Early Life of Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor
A famous orthopedic surgeon of Malaysia, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was born on 26th of July 1972 in Kuala Lumpur. A promising student, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor completed his high school from MARA in Muar. After completing his schooling, Sheik Muszaphar graduated as Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, India. Thereafter he opted for Masters of Surgery in Orthopaedic Surgery from the University of Kebangsaan in Malaysia. While pursuing his Masters he joined the Angkasawan program.

Hospital Seremban. A year later, in 1999, he moved to Kuala Lumpur and began practicing at the General Hospital of the city. Later, from the year 2000 to 2001 he served at the Hospital Selayang. Presently, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor of Malaysia is a renowned medic in medicine at the University Kebangsaan in Malaysia and a popular orthopedic surgeon.
Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor and the Angkasawan Program
In the year 2006, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor along with three other finalists, was chosen for the Angkasawan Program, in agreement with Russia. After initial training, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor along with another finalist Faiz Khaleed were short-listed for another 18 months training program to be held in Russia. After the completion of the training program, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was chosen as the prime member of the 16-member crew. After the completion of the training examination and the final medical test, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor was chosen to fly on Soyuz 11 spacecraft.
Sheik Muszaphar performed a number of experiments at the International Space Station. These experiments performed on board included the crystallization of various proteins, characteristics and growth of liver cancer and leukemia cells, and microbes in space. It is believed that all these experiments performed by the great Malaysian medic would be of great help to medical science.
