Kuala Lumpur became Wilayah Persekutuan (Federal Territory) in 1974. Since 1974, Kuala Lumpur had been operating under Federal Territories Ministry of Malaysia, which was formed during the tenure of Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
Kuala Lumpur mayor is the executive head of the city, who supervises the local government of the city. Datuk Abdul Hakim Borhan is the present mayor of Kuala Lumpur, who was elected for his first term in 2006.

Federal Titles
Tan Sri is the highest title that is given to winners of the Malaysian Federal Awards. The first three mayors of Kuala Lumpur were awarded 'Tan Sri' for their contribution in the administration of the city. 'Dato' is another famous federal title that is generally conferred by the hereditary ruler of the Malay states. It was received by Lokman Yusof, Elyas Omar and Kamaruzzman Shariff, erstwhile mayors of Kuala Lumpur. Mayors Ruslin Hasan and Mohmad Shaid Mohd Taufek received the title of 'Datuk'. This title in Kuala Lumpur is conferred to those who are appointed by the Governors of Penang, Sarawak, Melaka and Sabah.
