Overview

Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia, located in the Klang Valley. it is one of the largest and fastest growing cities of Malaysia. With an estimated population of 1.6 million, the city is the economical, cultural and educational center of the country. Being the legislative capital of Malaysia, the city houses the Malaysian Parliament, and the official residence of the Malaysian King along with some sections of the Malayan judiciary.

Established in the year 1850, the city has a diverse culture featuring Malay, Chinese, Indian, Euracian, Kadazans and Ibans along with other ethnic groups from east Malaysia and Peninsula Malaysia.

Government

Kuala Lumpur is the legislative capital of Malaysia and the seat of the Malaysian Parliament. The city of Kuala Lumpur has a local self-government. All the administrative functions of the city are executed by the Kuala Lumpur City Hall under the Federal Territories Ministry of Malaysia. A team of eleven members represents the city in the Lower House of the Parliament. The local self government of Kuala Lumpur works towards the development of town planning, social and economic growth, environmental protection and building control, public health, sanitation, waste removal and management and establishment of urban infrastructure of the city.

Economy

Kuala Lumpur is the economic and business center of Malaysia. It houses a number of administrative wings of many corporate offices, banks and embassies. A center of finance, insurance, real estate, media, and arts of Malaysia the city also houses the stock exchange of Malaysia called the Bursa Malaysia, Central Bank of Malaysia, Companies Commission of Malaysia and Securities Commission. The economy of Kuala Lumpur is driven by the service sector including finance, insurance, real estate, business services, wholesale and retail trade, restaurants and hotels, transport, storage and communication, utilities, personal services and government services and through the manufacturing and construction industry. Tourism and retail sector are two other major sources which earn great revenue for the city.

Transportation

One of the prominent features of the infrastructure of Kuala Lumpur is its comprehensive network of roads, rails and air transport. The city has wide roads and highways and expressways. The motorists have to pay a toll fee before crossing the highways or expressways, which they can pay in cash or by means of value added cards. Kuala Lumpur has three separate rail systems running across the city and along the Klang valley, called the rapid transit system. KL Sentral is the central railway station of the city, which manages the entire rail traffic movement across the city and to other cities through KTM Intercity system. Apart from the road and rail network, the city is well connected through air. The city is well served with two airports, the Kuala Lumpur International airport and the Subang Airport.

The city of Kuala Lumpur with a well developed technology and infrastructure has now developed into one of the major tourist destinations. The magnificent architecture of the gigantic buildings at Kuala Lumpur and the growing economy are fine examples of the developed infrastructure of the city.
