Carcosa Seri Negara is a historical building of an old colonial hotel, which first opened in the year 1989. Carcosa Seri Negara comprises of two huge mansions, the Carcosa and Seri Negara. The Carcosa is 103 years old where as the Seri Negara was inaugurated in the year 1913. In the Colonial period, these two mansions were the residences of the British Governors and the High Commissioners.
History of the Carcosa Seri Negara
The Carcosa Seri Negara was constructed by Sir Frank Swettenham in the year 1896. Located above the Lake Gardens, Carcosa meant 'Dear Thing' and the mansion served as the official residence of Sir Frank Swettenham, the Resident General of the Federated Malay States. Seri Negara, which meant the 'Beautiful Country', was the Kings house, which served as the residence of the Governor of the Straits Settlements and other eminent guests of the Federation of Malay States.
After the independence of Malaysia in the year 1956, the Carcosa Seri Negara was gifted to the British Government by the then Chief Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman. Later in the year 1987 the British High Commission returned the property to the Malaysian Government.
