VILNIUS

Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania. It is also the capital of the Vilnius city municipality and Vilnius district municipality. It received its name from Vilnia River, which passes through it. The city began to prosper during the reign of Sigismund August. The city was occupied by Russia during the Russo-Polish War and had to face much destruction. By the beginning of 19th century, it recovered and was densely populated making it the one of the largest in Northern Europe. Later in 1795, Vilnius was annexed by Russia and made it the capital of a guberniya, but was captured by the Germans in course of World War I. In July 1944, Soviet Army took over the city and was incorporated into the Soviet Union making it the capital of the Lithuanian SSR. The city became independent on March 11, 1990 and became Republic of Lithuania.



Area & Location: Situated in southeastern Lithuania, Vilinus lies at the confluence of the Vilnia and Neris Rivers. Located at 54°41' Latitude North and 25°17' Longitude East, the city covers a total area of 402 sq. km. The city has a population of 553,904, making it the largest city of Lithuania.

as the gateway to reach the city from other parts of the world serves the city. The Vilnius railway station, which handles many trains, is another important commutation facility available in the city. The city also has a well-developed public transportation system with several buses, trolleybuses and taxis. The construction of a tramway is on the cards. The highway that passes through the city connects it with other regions.
