One of the premier universities in the country, the Saint Joseph University was established in 1875. It offers

various graduate and post graduate programs. It is also a part of the Association of Arab Universities. It boasts of a distinguished faculty comprising of 1800 professors and student strength of about 10,000 students.
The Lebanese American University offers academic as well as professional courses from its campuses at Beirut as well as at Byblos. The University receives students from various parts of the world and from diverse nationalities.
The American University of Beirut was founded in 1866. It was established as a private and independent university with a non-sectarian stand. The different faculties offer graduate and post graduate programs in a wide variety of subjects.
The Universities are controlled by the Directorate General of Higher Education. It holds the responsibility of smoothly conducting the administration of the colleges and institutes functioning under the universities.
