Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut |
|
Rafic Hariri International Airport serves as the vital link between Beirut and the rest of the world.
The Rafic Hariri International Airport in Beirut serves as the crucial link between the country and other nations of the world. Being the only commercial airport in the country, it is that link that enables Beirut as well as Lebanon to be connected with the rest of the world.
The airport is situated within the suburban region of Khaldeh. It is located at a moderate distance of about 8 kilometers from the city center. The airport began its operations from 1954 and is the only passenger airport in the country. It underwent some renovation work in 1977 though further damage was wrecked during the time of Israel's invasion.
This damage prompted the building of a new airport that was inaugurated in 1998 while the second phase was completed in 2000. It began its full fledged operations from 2002. The airport covers a total area of 7 million square meters. The airport has undergone renovation in recent times. It is now of the capacity to manage 6 million passengers on an annual basis. Its sheer gigantic size can accommodate 30 aircrafts landing at a time. Within the year 2035, the Rafic Hariri International Airport aims at the safe and secure movement of as many as 16 million passengers.
