National Evangelical Church Beirut


Epitomizing the Christian faith and architectural excellence, the National Evangelical Church of Beirut is one of the famous tourist attractions of the city.

Located in Downtown Beirut, the National Evangelical Church was established in 1848. The church, a significant structure of the city, is also famous as one of the major tourist attractions of Beirut. Accessible from various parts of the city, the church has witnessed various phases of ups and downs since its inception.

National Evangelical Church- the building and the services

The National Evangelical Church, Beirut, conducts masses and services for the Lebanese as well as Non-Lebanese people living in the country. The present church building was build after the completion of the Lebanese War. However, the structure and the carvings of the church gives it an impressive appearance. The masses are carried out in Arabic and English.

National Evangelical Church- the functions

The National Evangelical Church, Beirut, serves as the chief among the group of churches in different locations including Kafarshima, Abeih, Khalde, Hadath,
Jdeideh, Dbayyeh, Aramoun and Dhour Shweir. All these churches function under the National Evangelical Union of Lebanon.

National Evangelical Church- the beginning

The attempts of US Congregational and Presbyterian missionaries resulted in the beginning of the church. The initial building of National Evangelical Church was constructed in 1869. Following Protestantism, the church became an important religious place of Beirut.

The destruction and reconstruction of during the Lebanese War

During the Lebanese War of 1975-1990, the church suffered severe damages. The building was completely destroyed. It was only after the conclusion of the war, that the church building was restored and services resumed in the 1990s. Rapid development of the church led to the setting up of the International Community Church in 2002.

National Evangelical Church- participant in various social services

The National Evangelical Church carries out various social services for the people. The schools at Beirut and Kafarshima and the Schneller orphanage run by the church of Beirut provides service to the poor and the needy.
