About the Beirut History
The history of Beirut dates back to the Stone Age. During this period, the terrain of Beirut actually comprised of two parts which lay on either side of the River Beirut. During 64 BC, the city was undoubtedly a prominent neighborhood under the rule of the Romans. Before that the Seleucid rulers also made this city well known. The Roman domination came to an end in 551 AD after a number of earthquakes devastated the city. The ancient history of Beirut depicts the city as a “Phoenician city” of early era.
Beirut under Muslim Domination

In 635 AD Beirut was invaded by the Muslim rulers who restructured the city. They again constructed and encircled the city with several fortifications and demarcated the city from neighboring lands. During 10th century, the growth of trade through the sea route helped Beirut to regain its reputation as a seaport city of Middle East.
Beirut under Christian and Ottoman Rule
In 1110 AD, Beirut came under the domination of Christian Powers who founded a settlement known as “Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem”. After this invasion the trade and business of Beirut flourished more. In 1291, the Syrian Rule over Beirut proved extremely beneficial and turned the city into the main harbor for spice trading in Europe.
The city of Beirut became a well reputed business center after 1500 AD under the Ottoman domination.
