Demography of Beirut


Demography of Beirut provides an idea about the ethnic, cultural and religious diversity of the city. Currently the population of Beirut is 1.5 million people, nearly half of the whole population of Lebanon. The ethnic groups of Beirut mainly comprise Syrians, Kurdish, Arabs and Armenians.

Religious Groups of Beirut:

People of Beirut follow different religions such as Christianity, Islam and Druze. Demography of Beirut shows that the Shias and Sunnis form majority of the Muslim population. On the other hand, the Maronites form Beirut's largest Christian community. Although the Druze population mainly follows Islamic belief system with some Christian as well as Judaic influences.
Languages Spoken by the People of Beirut:

Arabic is the official language of Beirut and most of the people speak Arabic. Apart from Arabic, French and English are also widely spoken in Beirut. 75% of the whole population of Beirut is literate.

Life Style of Beirut People:

Beirut people still follow their traditional life style though western influences have affected mostly the urban population. People living in the mountain areas, however, still follow the old customs and rituals.
