Strathmore University started operating as a college in the year 1961. It acquired the status of a university in 2002, as a Letter of Interim Authority was offered by the Commission of Higher Education. As a university, this institute has Faculty of Information Technology and Faculty of Commerce.
In the initial years of foundation of Strathmore College, courses in both Arts and Science subjects were offered to the students. The courses were offered by professionals who also started Educational Trust, a charitable organization. It was later named as the Strathmore Educational Trust.
Soon, Strathmore College was recognized to cater professional courses to its students along with academic courses. In 1966 twenty five students were admitted to the course of Accountancy. These students were to appear in the examination of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants or ACCA. East African Breweries, BAT and Shell East Africa took the initiative to sponsor the students of Accountancy of Strathmore College.
Accountancy course for about 60 students was started by Strathmore College in 1982. It was started to professionally train the employees of the companies. These Accountancy classes were held in the evening after the working hours of the students. The companies sponsored the students undertaking this course.
Kianda College was set up as a co-educational institute to cater Accountancy and Management courses. The Kianda College was set up on a 5 acre land in Madaraka Estate that was gifted by the Kenyan Government. Government of Italy and the European Union also offered aid for this project. Kianda College combined with Strathmore College and it is in 1993, Strathmore College was shifted to Madaraka Estate.
Strathmore University is one of the reputed universities in Nairobi. The Strathmore University is located at P.O. Box 59857, 00200 City Square, Nairobi, Kenya. Besides offering regular course programs, it also has a center for Distance Learning. Students can pursue Accountancy through the correspondence courses offered by the university.
Admission and Courses Offered at Strathmore University
Candidates interested to study at Strathmore University, Nairobi have to appear in an entrance examination. Separate entrance examinations are held for each course on separate days. A personal interview also follows the entrance examination. Candidates have to pay a fee for appearing in the entrance
