Nairobi River

Nairobi River is the chief river flowing through the city of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. This river had in the past been considerably polluted. However, the government has launched special projects and awareness camps to check further environmental damage. This river has a rather short course as it travels some five kilometers.

Along The Nairobi River Course

The Nairobi River has its source in Kiyuku springs and takes around a couple of hours to complete the entire course. Near the source of the river, the waters are always very clean because the city pollutants do not reach this place. There are three swamps adjoining to the Nairobi River including the Ondiri Swamp, Nderi Swamp and the Kabete Swamp. The Ondiri swamp is the least explored of all the swap regions. This region is still abounding in fresh underground water supply.
The assumption is that the water is supplied by Naivasha Lake. The approximate distance between the lake and the swamp region is 80 kilometers.

Pollution in Nairobi River and Measures to Protect Nairobi River

The pollution of the Nairobi River is caused chiefly in and around the city. The estate regions of Kileleshwa, Kilimani and Milimani and the residential regions around Kabete and Dagoretti are most polluted. The chief pollutant is sewerage waste. To check further pollution and to make correct utility of the river water, the Nairobi River Basin Programme has been launched. The goal of the projects is to improve biodiversity, provide for drinking water to the people of Nairobi and also the betterment of the economically backward class residents of Nairobi.
