Kenya’s national railway is known as the Kenya Railways or as Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC). In 1977, the Kenya Railways Corporation was established. The railway track of KRC connects Kisumu port located at Lake Victoria with the Indian Ocean Port located at Mombasa. Kenya Railways Corporation can be contacted at PO Box 30121, Nairobi, Kenya.
After the First World War, the Uganda Railway came to be known as East African Railways and Harbours Corporation or EARC. Kenya’s railway system was maintained by EARC. However, from 1977 onwards Kenya Railways Corporation took up the responsibility of maintaining railway of Kenya. In Kenya, narrow gauge railway tracks have been set up.
Due to better management of the railways in Kenya, it was decided to privatize Kenya Railways Corporation. It

was taken over in November 2006 by Rift Valley Railways Consortium or RVRC. This hand over of KRC was scheduled in August 2006, which was postponed till November of the same year.
In Nairobi, a rail depot was set up by the Uganda Railway. This rail depot is situated almost halfway on the mainline of Kenya’s railway. The route of the mainline has been set up following the one set by the Uganda Railway. From the mainline branch rail lines have been constructed that link Uganda and Tanzania.
Railway is one of the major mediums of transport in Nairobi. Jumbo Kenya Deluxe train runs from Nairobi to Mombasa. This train plies every week for three times. The journey takes about 14 hours. From Nairobi Port Florence Express plies to Kisumu. Some of the main railway stations of Kenya Railways are Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Mtito Andei and Naivasha.
