Ngong Hills


Ngong Hills in Nairobi is one of the major hills in the country of Kenya. The hills are located to the southwestern side of the city and it overlooks the Great Rift Valley. The Ngong hills came to be known by this name some seventy years back, before which they were known by the name of Engongu Emuny especially to the natives Maasais.

The Ngong hills, Nairobi, comprises four peaks and at the base of hills, the Massai people live in their villages. During the time of colonial rule, the British had developed the region considerably and evidence of English style settlements can be seen everywhere in the region.
The Ngong hills, today house a number of hotels and tourists accommodations, which are solely managed by a private organization. Karen Blixen, a Danish writer had visited the Ngong hills around 1978 and his vivid accounts and observations of the region are highly esteemed by the locals and also travel enthusiasts around the world.

The original name of the Ngong Hills that is Engongu Emuny gradually became obsolete, as it was a rather inconvenient name to pronounce. However, the name, “Engongu Emuny” means the eye of the rhinoceros or the well. From the Ngong Hills, excursions can be undertaken to the Nairobi National Park.
