Kenyatta University


Kenyatta University was previously known as Kenyatta University College and it was officially declared as a university on 23rd August of 1985. This university is one of the renowned universities of Kenya. Kenyatta University is located at a distance of 23 km from the city of Nairobi. The Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University is Professor Olive Mugenda. Kenyatta University, Nairobi offers best of education and takes care of the all round development of the students. About 8,000 students are enrolled with this university. The campus of Kenyatta University extends for an area of about 1,100 acres.

The Kenyatta College was founded around 1965 and this educational institution functioned as the Teacher Education Division and the Secondary Education Division. Later the Secondary Education Division was closed down. The college earned reputation within a few years due to its academic excellence.

By the Parliamentary Act of 1970, Kenyatta College came under the University of Nairobi. From then onwards Kenyatta College came to be known as Kenyatta University College. In 1972, the college started its classes with 200 students. In the institute
Diploma courses for undergraduates and degree course in Bachelor of Education were also started. It also started training programs of post graduate and undergraduate level for teachers.

The President of the country gave assent to transform the Kenyatta University College to a university. The Kenyatta University Act was passed in August 1985 and it was implemented from September of the same year. The inauguration of the Kenyatta University was celebrated in December 1985. Many faculties under Kenyatta University were opened. The Jomo Kenyatta College of Agriculture was also under the Kenyatta University before it attained the status of a university in 1988.

Home Economics, Arts, Education, Environmental Studies and Science are some of the departments in Kenyatta University. It has set up an e-learning center for students. It has a well-stocked library for students and staff of the university.

The aim of the university is to provide learning facilities for students offer quality teaching and carry on research programs for betterment of humanity. It will not only cater education to individual students of the institution but also help in understanding their social duties and inculcate moral values in them.
