Nairobi Hospitals


The Nairobi hospitals comprise an important aspect of Nairobi health. The earliest hospitals in Nairobi were developed during the time of colonial rule by the British. Basically, the bigger and better equipped hospitals were developed with the motive of treating the army men who were posted in Nairobi, Kenya.

Nairobi Hospital

The Nairobi Hospital, formerly known as the European hospital, was a hospital meant for the treatment of white skinned colonialists. Later on when this discrimination was dropped, the hospital was re-christened as Nairobi Hospital. The various departments of this hospital include the operation theaters, blood bank unit, the pathological laboratory, the accident and emergency ward and maternity wards.

Aga Khan Hospital, Nairobi

The Aga Khan Hospital has different wards and around 254 beds for patients. The departments of the hospital include primary care department, specialist service department, diagnostic department, clinical support services, emergency care, infant and childcare department. The doctors, nurses and midwives in this hospital are very well trained. Apart from being a hospital, it is also a medical school. This hospital was founded in the year 1958 and has been given the ISO:9001:2000 certificate.

Pumwani Maternity Hospital

The Pumwani Maternity Hospital is particularly specialized in dealing with maternity care services. Apart from delivery, complications in the pre-natal and post natal stages are also treated. Most of the people of Nairobi are economically poor and need guidance regarding family planning issues.
