Nairobi Health care system has developed commendably in the postcolonial period. Other than government hospitals, the two private hospitals, which have become very famous over the years, include the Aga Khan Hospital and the Nairobi Hospital.
Development of Nairobi Hospitals
It was in the early 20th century, during the times of the First World War that the specialized hospitals were constructed in the hills of Nairobi. At that point of time, the hospitals were meant to serve the army men. By the 1930s, considerable improvement was made and many government-run dispensaries and health care centers were built in Nairobi. These hospitals served the health needs of civilian population. At this point of time, the European Hospital was built, which treated only the people who were natives of Europe. The European Hospital later changed to the Nairobi hospital and it now treats everyone irrespective of color and creed. The foundation of the Aga Khan University Hospital was laid down in 1958. Back in 2003, the hospital achieved the ISO:9001:2000 certification, which marks it off as a one off the top rated hospitals. The Pumwani Maternity Hospital is one of the government run hospitals, which is reputed for safe deliverance of babies.
The Nairobi Government Health Departments
The Nairobi City Council has various responsibilities to fulfill towards the city and one among them is the health care system of Nairobi. The health department is further differentiated for better administrative purpose. These subdivisions include the Public Health Inspectorate Section, Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Epidemiology Disease Control Section, Curative and Preventive and informative health Services.
Apart from hospitals, dispensaries and clinics of Nairobi there are also a few health clubs, which can be accessed for staying physically fit. These clubs have modern physical exercise equipments.
