Nairobi Football


Football in Nairobi is loved by one and all. Soccer is played in every part of the city and children are just crazy about the game. Nairobi Football clubs have been established in the city, making the sport quite popular in and outside Kenya by promoting new talents and youngsters in the game. AFC Leopards, Mathare United, Tusker FC and Gor Mahia are some of the popular football clubs in Nairobi. Nyayo National stadium and Nairobi city stadium are primarily used for playing football.

Nairobi Football History

During the early 50's, Nairobi Heroes Sports Club was established by a group of Goan Turks. Anybody who excelled in the game of football was given chance by this sports club. Some of the players of Nairobi Heroes football team were Antonu Raposa, Antony Fernandes, Xavier Santiago, Santos D'Souza, Billy Gomes and Luis
Pereira.Gradually, they started earning fame and name by winning several matches and trophies. In 1950, it won four trophies. However, by the year 1967, the club was closed as the community has started to relocate in different places of the world.

In the year 1960, Kenya Football Federation was set up to manage the game. A meeting of football leaders was organized in Nairobi in the beginning of the year, with the aim of forming a national league. Others who joined the meeting were Isaac Lugonzo, Tony Pinto, Williams Ngaah and Jimmy McFarnell. In the year 1963, the committee was inaugurated in the presence of 10 clubs. Nairobi had 7 teams comprising Kakamega, Nairobi Heroes, Maragoli United, Samia Union, Luo Union, Marama and Bunyore. Initially for matches were played by the league of which two was held in Nairobi. Joe Kadenge from the Maragoli United was the fastest goal scorer in the league.
