Daystar University


Daystar University is one of the renowned educational institutes in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded in Zimbabwe in 1964, the university plays a crucial role in promoting higher education in capital city of Kenya. Not only, Kenya, but students from other African countries also study in the Daystar University.

Daystar University conducts both graduate and post-graduate programs. Several short courses are also offered here. Dr. Godfrey Nguru is the Vice Chancellor of Daystar University.

The History of Daystar University:

Mrs. Faye K. Smith, Dr. Donald Smith and Dr. Pheko took the initiative to set up this educational institute. A few years later, Daystar Communications was launched by the American couple. Due to the Civil War in 1974 in Zimbabwe, the headquarters of the Daystar Communication was shifted to Nairobi in Kenya.

Later in 1974 Daystar Communication set up a campus on about 1.54 acre of land in Nairobi. But more space was required for the campus of Daystar. The new campus was set up near Nairobi at Athi River on a 300 acre land. Here the first year class was held. During this time Daystar University was known by the name of Daystar University College.

In 1979, Professor Stephen Talitwala was appointed by the Board as African Executive Director for the first time to look after the university. From 1982, the Daystar University was recognized as an autonomous institution.

At Daystar University in Nairobi annually a course is held along with International Institute for Christian Communications. The university started a diploma
Communications. The university started a diploma course in Christian Communications with duration of 2 years from 1976. Within 2 years, Masters Courses in Christian Ministries and Christian Communications were also started at the university. These courses were started in association with Wheaton College in USA. From 1984 this educational institute of Nairobi started undergraduate degree course with duration of 4 years.

From 1984 the Daystar Communications came to be known as the Daystar University College. Daystar University came to be recognized as a university from 1994. It belongs to the Evangelical Christian Liberals of Africa. Its aim is to disseminate the message of Christ and to cater formal higher education to Christians residing in Africa.
