U.S. Embassy in Tokyo was set up with the purpose of serving American citizens traveling to Tokyo and Japan. The Tokyo US Embassy has set up a number of sections for the convenience of American tourists to this capital city. Each of these sections performs a dedicated function, thereby easing the job of the American tourist.

Tokyo U.S. Embassy Functions

The functions of the US Embassy in Japan may be summarized as follows:
  • Visa Services – Japanese citizens willing to travel for less than 90 days do not require visa for touring United States of America. Japanese citizens fall under the Visa Waiver Program offered by US Government. However, candidates who do not fall under the Waiver Program need a non-immigrant visa for traveling to U.S.A. Non-immigrant visas are usually processed within one week from the date of interview of the applicant. Immigrant visas, for Japanese citizens planning to move to United States, are issued in cases of employment, family related issues, and lottery winners.
  • Foreign Commercial Service – Under Commercial Services the US Embassy in Japan offers multiple facilities. It provides consultancy to US firms willing to trade or invest in Japan.The embassy arranges trade meeting between the US agency and its Japanese
    counterpart. Trade events are either organized or promoted by the US Embassy to further the scope of US trade in Japan.
  • American Citizen Services – For American citizens it processes their passports, registers the birth of babies, arranges and registers marriages of US citizens in Japan, arranges for visas to China, provides information on safety and security measures while touring Tokyo or Japan. It provides information to US tourists regarding driving in Japan, and medical facilities in Tokyo.
  • Public Affairs Section – This covers all the diplomatic functions of the United States government in Japan. All affairs of press, education, culture and education are looked after by this section.
