Train travel is the most convenient option for the tourists in Tokyo, which is in the forms of surface railway, underground or subways, and monorails. Railways in Tokyo are operated both by the government and private railway companies.

Subways are the best modes of commuting within and around the city of Tokyo. Tokyo subways are operated by two railway companies: the Tokyo Metro with eight subway lines, and Toei Subways with four lines.

  • The Japan Railways Yamanote Line - a circular route connecting the main city centers and the six major stations of Tokyo, Ikebukuro, Shibuya, Shinagawa, Shinjuku, and Ueno is the most important one.
  • The Narita Express line - Connects Narita Airport to Tokyo city.
  • Chuo Line Rapid – Running across the Yamanote Line this rapid rail service connects Shinjuku with Tokyo
  • Chuo Sobu Line – This is a local slow service running across the Yamanote route
  • Keihin Tohoku Line – This JR line runs parallel to the Yamanote line operates towards the eastern half.
  • Saikyo Rinaki Line – This is the corresponding service on the western half of the Yamanote line.
Traveling by bus is another way of commuting between city locations. Overnight buses between Tokyo and Osaka, and Tokyo and Kyoto are also available. Direct buses are available from Tokyo to Nagoya, Kobe, and Nara. Buses to Hakone and Fuji are available from Shinjuku railway station.

Ferry service between islands is another popular mode of transport. Ocean Tokyo Ferry Service carries passengers from Tokyo to Tokushima, and Kitakyushu. Oshima Transport ferries passenger from Tokyo to Shibushi and Naha.
