Mass Transit: Public transportation in Tokyo consists of a network of highly efficient trains, subways, buses, monorails, and trams. Overground and underground trains are the main mode of transportation in Tokyo. Most of the rail lines are privately-owned. According to an estimate, some 20 million people travel on these rails everyday. The government and private operators run buses throughout Tokyo. These buses are a convenient mode of traveling from places, which are far away from the train stations.

Airports: There are two main airports in Tokyo. These are Tokyo International Airport in Haneda and Narita International Airport. Haneda is Tokyo's domestic airport, which is located at a convenient location in south of central Tokyo. Although it handles only domestic flights, it is still referred to as Tokyo International Airport, a fact which has confused many people. Narita International Airport is the largest and main international airport of Japan. This airport is not actually located in Tokyo, but is located 66 km east of central Tokyo. This is the main gateway to Japan with more than 47 airlines operating out of its two terminals.

Taxis: Approximately 50,000 taxis run on the roads of Tokyo. You can find taxis at the airport or the railway stations.

You can also hail a taxi on the streets of Tokyo. The fare for the journey is indicated on the meter at the end of the journey. Some of the taxis accept payment by credit card also. Approximately 90 percent of Tokyo taxis are medium-sized taxis, which carry a maximum of four passengers. Fares are usually 660 Yen for the first two kilometers and then increase by 80 Yens every 274 meters thereafter.

Water Bus/Ferries: You can commute between two islands on the water buses that run between the islands. A number of ferries connect Tokyo to Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa. For tourists, there are many boat rides, which are operated by private operators.

Online Booking of Flights: Two major international airlines of Japan are Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airlines. Other major airlines, which fly to Tokyo, are Air India, Air China, Air France, Northwest, Alitalia, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Thai International, Continental Airlines, Garuda, Korean Air, KLM, Lufthansa, Malaysia Airlines, American Airlines, Qantas, United Airlines, and Virgin Atlantic. Many of these airlines provide the facility of online booking of tickets. You too can book tickets to and from Tokyo in any of the major airlines.
